The idea is delightful--the female offspring of 19th century monster-makers get together and have adventures based on conflicts arising from their backgrounds. The characters are well delineated and the history and settings researched. The combination of plot and character is absorbing. After the first two, I plan to read the next in the series. But, heavens, this book needs a better editor! At least a quarter of the verbiage is unnecessary filler, there are too many places where the author over-explains while the reader thinks, "Quit! I get it already!" Worse, there are incidents where the characters simply act too stupid for belief. For instance, there's a scene where shots are fired off stage. All the ladies were recently in an altercation where shots were fired from the same gun. In this scene, there is no other possibility for that noise--certainly no fireworks or car backfiring--yet one (Mary, I think, the gun's owner) says, "What's that?" Other bits are simply annoying, such as Diana's anachronisms ("awesome") and repetition of "easy-peasy," and Mary's prudish ignorance. Would a somewhat educated woman of the late 19th century truly expect European city women to go around in ceremonial peasant costumes all the time? Why is such a detail necessary? Our hard-working author deserves a more efficient editor.

I bought both the first book and this second one together and read them consecutively. Having now finally finished them, I feel rather like Diana must have felt contemplating yet one more meal of Knodel. And like her, I will resist yet one more meal of the stuff and NOT read the third volume of these characters' "adventures ". Two was really more than I could stomach.I agree wholeheartedly with other two star reviewers here who have said "too many characters" " no character development ". While I had no trouble keeping track of who was who, I started to groan as we had yet one more "story" (really backstory) of yet one more new character. The author is clearly struggling to write a full novel--as opposed to the short stories she's been more accustomed to writing--and to fill it out, she includes these backstories (which should stay on her desktop and not be brought into the book itself, at least not in such an overt and repetitious manner). I see from her bio that Ms Goss teaches writing, and I'm guessing she's been discovering that there's a big difference between teaching it and DOING it. The author really has little in the way of story, which makes the size of this book all the more distressing. We go from 1) short storylike "adventure" where we meet new character to 2) new character's story to 3) reflections by an older character (by way of integrating new character) and 4) on to new adventure. And pattern repeats. Endlessly. Several of these characters add nothing to the overall and could have been (SHOULD have been) edited out.As for "overall", it's thin. When we come, eventually, to the climactic moment, the lead character hardly remembers what the whole point for the journey was in the first place! Nevermind, a new adventure beckons. Which apparently takes us into book three...but they'll make that journey without me. I won't be reading it.

Goss has outdone herself in this, the continuing adventures of the members of the Athena Club: Mary Jekyll, her sister Diana Hyde, Catherine Moreau, Beatrice Rappacini, and Justine Frankenstein. Can they save Lucinda Van Helsing from the evil experiments of her father? Can they figure out the true intentions of the Societe des Alchemistes? Will they meet other interesting and unusual people of history and legend? This delightful book holds the answers. Well written, funny, touching, surprising, and highly recommended. The story is wrapped up and the third book is previewed. Loved it!

I looked forward to reading this and was not disappointed. I really enjoyed the first book in the series and was hopeful that this one would be as good - but I did not expect to like it even more. The book's length (~700 pages) was a bit daunting - would it slow down? Would there be unnecessarily drawn out passages? Fortunately, the book never lost its pace. We learn more about the Athena Club members and meet other literary characters along the way including Count Dracula, Carmilla, Irene Adler, and more. The book was droll and amusing and exciting, just what I wanted to read this summer. I don't want to give away any plot secrets, so I'll just say that some mysteries were solves, others arose, and I am eagerly awaiting the next round of adventures had by the monstrous gentlewomen.
