I just ordered the book after reading the first sample chapter online. I cannot wait to read more. The first chapter really sucked me in. While some reviewers have been turned off about the marital story, I don't think one can really tell the story of this band without the marriage being a character of its own. Besides, I'm a mom in my 40s now, and I have struggled in my marriage and when other people are open about this in their lives, I tend to appreciate the honesty.I felt inspired to include this little bit of my personal experience with the band, since Kim talks about the Lafayette Street loft in the first chapter. I was in that loft with them back in 2006.I was a huge SY fan all through the 90s. While it was cool to be "alt" in the suburbs and cities, I was a rural kid where few of us were into edgy, arty music. I started college "the year that punk broke" in 1991, and my college years in Upstate NY are defined by Sonic Youth and many of the indie bands that came to mark a generation.Fast forward to 2006. I was in my mid-30s living in Denver, writing, and my SY days were long behind me. I was asked to interview SY for a European magazine, and off to NYC I flew.At first, I was to meet up with them at the studio while they were recording Rather Ripped. The producer had a death in the family, I was told last minute, and recording was cancelled for the day. Instead, I was to meet up with the band at Thurston & Kim's Lafayette Street loft. Having been such a huge fan, and never really written about a band before, I was riddled with anxiety about the assignment. But, then realizing I would be in their home made it utterly nerve wracking.The loft was modest and the furnishings were unexpected. Just regular furniture, nothing fancy. An old navy blue couch, an older mid-century kitchen table, an old TV, and some great art. By NYC standards, it was open and large. Coco was in the loft and I could hear her throughout the interview playing with a friend.So we all sat at the kitchen table and I did my best to ask good questions, though I was so nervous I felt like walking out. Thruston was the quintessential "front man." He was very personable and easy to get information from. He's charismatic, talkative, and down to earth. Kim was significantly more reserved and harder to break the ice with, which was hard on me, as I was in such a rookie position that day and was so down on myself for being inexperienced. I took almost all non-verbal cues personally and as a sign that they knew I was out of my element. (A year or so later, I was on the phone with Kim doing a Free Kitten interview, and she was much more open and forthcoming. I also had my confidence back.) Steve was super sweet and I liked him instantly. I wished I could just talk with him more, though he wasn't particularly loquacious. Lee was a tough one for me. He came across as rather egotistical and to this day I can't put my finger on what it was that turned me off. His eyes were black and piercing, and for the most part, I was uncomfortable with him. I felt like at any moment, he'd say something sharp and unsettling to me. My gut is a trusty guide, and it was uncomfortable with him. Each one of them were just regular folk, and there's a decidedly different connection you make with someone when they are not in performance mode. Rock stars tend to have a super hero quality on stage, but when you meet them in person and just sit around at a kitchen table, they're just people like everyone else. That is what struck me the most.Overall, the interview turned out OK and afterward I flew back to Denver to piece it together. I listened to Rather Ripped many times, trying to connect the album to the interview, but really struggled. While in the loft, we listened to a few tracks (super loud) and I was able to get a feel for the album while talking to them. But, the truth is that I really just wanted to write about them as people. The music was secondary, on that day.I was a complete rookie, as it relates to music journalism, at the time. I wish I had been more bold and less polite. I wish I had dug for more personal nuggets, especially with Kim, as one can tell in her presence that there's a lot under the surface and that she is publically guarded. She doesn't put it all out there for the world to consume, and perhaps this is why people have called her "mysterious" and "elusive."I'll come back and review the book after I've read it all. The first chapter, however, is outstanding.
I had a good time with this. It made for some engaging, before bedtime reading—really fascinating in the settings it moves through without requiring too much mental bandwidth to parse. Gordon writes in a very plainspoken manner and presents her view directly, even if her view on a matter is simple ambivalence.I had almost zero context for Kim Gordon as a public person or the band Sonic Youth but I always like delving into a person's own telling about who they are and the ingredients that might have come together to create achievement. A big portion of the book is structured around events with the band but where there are a few references that were lost on me, things are still largely shot through the prism of her own feelings and insights. Some autobiographers feel they have a lot to protect and it shows on the page but I never got the sense that that was Gordon's aim. She does seem to value privacy but does acknowledge relevant, emotionally challenging circumstances for clarity and comments how they affected her. She doesn't choose to reflect with too much detail around some of that stuff but that choice was more a reveal on her character for me than an obstacle to a satisfying read. The focus here was her early memories, some rumination on what drives her, her portrait of a specific and departed era of New York City, insight into her artistic aims, and the key decisions that moved her through the professional path she's covered.Some readers noted that the book could use more editing. I agree there's room for it here and there but there isn't anything so bad or so constant that it distracts from the message. And some sections were really kind of lyrical and lovely. What drew me through the story was the sense that Gordon was trying to express authentically from exactly where she is. It's really fascinating to hear people out when they're coming from that place.
For those that picked up this book to read about Sonic Youth, and the inspiration for particular songs or albums, maybe 30 - 40 percent of the book is that. Though, even the chapters focused on particular albums are more about what was going on in Kim's life at the time, not everyone in the band. It was probably because I know that her career had a happy ending, that I enjoyed reading about her struggles as someone trying to make it in the art world in Los Angeles, and especially the art world New York City. I think I always wonder how people manage to make it to fame, and she does a good job of showing how it's a combination of talent, luck, getting to know the right people (not just for networking but also as a way to find those that inspire your development as an artist), and pushing yourself to continuously create new things, and experiment.She does also give us the hot gossip people look for in a book where other famous people are bound to come into her life. Though I cared less about that; for me the two chapters on Thurston's affair were much more detailed than I expected, but I have been cheated on before so these chapters became very relatable and emotional for me to read. Overall, the book is a solid "B+" in writing, but I'll give it an "A" because I really like their music, her tangents about pop music and artists, and because it taught me about feminism in rock music.
