From the Author
While I was planning "Only the Good," I was traveling to a lot of cities that had pulp and paper mills. The mills always looked eerie to me: lighted at night and wreathed in steam. Whenever I went by them, I would think what a great setting they would make for a murder -- all that interesting, potentially lethal machinery and atmospheric fog. Then I read about a skeleton found in the paper mill up in Bellingham, Washington, and I knew I had my venue. For Jack, a polluting Bellingham paper mill is just one of many dangers to survive in "Only the Good."

Author Rosemary Reeve does a great job in this 3rd book of Jack Hart, continuing the development of the tight 3 characters (Jack, Harmony and Mark) with interesting (and seemingly accurate) location references in Seattle, and in this particular novel, Bellingham Washington. Still a quick read and interesting storyline twists, this story reveals Jackʻs family history. Jacks continued search for just who was his absent dad, an unknown “family†and legacy just a short drive from Seattle. (Recall that book1 was Harmony and her discoveries of who her Father is, then book2 delved into Markʻs Father, and now in book3 itʻs Jackʻs turn to find about Dad -and what a twisted story it is!
Sometimes a new author makes a splash with an excellent first book only to lay an egg with the second. That is not the case here. This book shows Reeve is adept at sustaining interest and telling a good story not only with action (as in the first book), but also more subtly in conversation, introspection and psychological nuance. Not that this book has no action, far from it, but it is somewhat more intricate that the first and there are quite a few more characters that need to be introduced and developed. All of this is done masterfully, and the reappearing characters are consistent and appealing. This is a great book for a rainy day, a plane trip, the beach, or snippets of time before falling asleep at night (though it will keep you up). I am delighted to see that two further Jack Hart mysteries have come on the scene and I am plotting when exactly to read them to allow maximum savory enjoyment.
Each new Jack Hart book I read becomes my new favorite--a true testament to the skill with which they are written. This installment opens up even more of the mystery that is Jack Hart himself and each chapter leaves you both hoping for and dreading the next revelation about his family and background to come. Ms. Reeve is a naturally gifted story teller. Each turn and twist in the plot makes you marvel at her inspiration, but so glad for it. The only regret I have is that I finished the book and will have to wait for the next one. I do hope it won't be too long. . .
I have loved this whole series. Each is so unique, but each is remarkably spell bounding. I love how each portrays deep set family issues which must be overcome. If I were to change anything it would be to remove the few swear words which exist, I don't think they are needed despite how prevalent they are in the world today. Other than that they are fabulous. I love how the mysteries unfold and are resolved. I love how all the characters are masterfully interwoven. I would recommend the series to anyone and everyone. I can't wait to start number 4!
Great mystery! I thoroughly enjoyed this book in the series. I look forward to reading more!
What an enjoyable trilogy. The non formulaic mysteries captivated me and have left me wanting for more. Write more Rosemary!!!
This book was a gift from the author, but I intend to go order the other two volumes right away. I want to know about Jack Hart and his girlfriend and his buddies. I enjoyed the prose and authentic detail of the Pacific Northwest, on top of a great mystery plot. Every chapter ends with a teaser (Charles Dickens, the serial novelist, would be proud). There are many twists and turns, often causing me to actually exclaim out loud with amazement and/or alarm. In short, a great read.
As anxious to read about Jack Hart Book 3 on my vacation as I was to go on my vacation and it did not disappoint! In fact, I'm not sure which of the Jack Hart books I liked the most, but Book 3 was suspenseful and had wonderful twists and turns. We got to know Jack Hart and Harmony even better as Jack discovers his personal family history and background - all while entangled in a murder mystery. Reeves delivers a wonderfully written sequel and I look forward to the next in the series. Great book.
