Penguin has offered a box set of the Iliad and the Odyssey with its blue and gold spines respectively. I had always intended to buy that set, but I when I was ready to do so I was pleasantly surprised to find that the box set had been expanded to three with the addition of the Aeneid with a beautiful gold spine. Robert Fragles' translations of these epic poems are easy to read and understand. Occasionally the language is a bit earthy. The introductions help prepare one to read these seminal works of Western Civilization. While I ordinarily purchase and display hardcover books, these paperback volumes are attractive and look nice in any living room or den.
OK, you're getting three of the great literary epics in this set. I'm not going to attempt to critique the Iliad/Odyssey/Aeneid as I'm not able to do them justice. That being said, there are two reasons why I think this set is one of the better purchases you can make regarding these three epics:First, out of all of the translations out there, this one ranks among the best. I do not read ancient Greek, so I can't comment in terms of the accuracy of the translation itself; however, these translations attain an admirable feat in that the language employed is clear and easily understandable while retaining an epic feel. I have read two other translations of the Iliad, the one by Lattimore and the one by Lombardo, and enjoyed each for the strengths that the translators bring to the table. Lattimore feels impressively epic and is, supposedly, much more faithful to the original Greek (great for students of ancient Greek), while Lombardo is a faster-paced, energetic rendering, if not a little too colloquial at times. For me, this translation feels like a happy balance between the two. The English has a nicer flow than the Lattimore, but it also feels more epic than the Lombardo.Second, this set just looks great. This might be a little shallow, but I'm the kind of person who likes to have books that look nice on a shelf and feel good while being read. The paperback binding, cover-art, and page thickness for each volume is perfect. I also like how the set lines up well when placed in my bookcase. I'm not sure if I'll keep the cover for the set or not, but either way, I really like the appearance, and I doubt you'll be disappointed with the look and feel of these volumes.If you're looking for a set of these three classic epics that is high quality both in the quality of writing and its physical appearance, you need look no further.
This an exquisite set. For classic works like this, I would usually prefer hardcover, but this is about as nice a paperback gets. Love the thick, well-designed covers and the deckle page edges. Slipcase is also a great touch. Without getting into 'which translation is best' debates, Fagles' translations are a joy to read. Compared with my previous stodgy experiences, these were fresh and vibrant. All in all, a tremendous value.
This is the third or fourth version of the Iliad I have used in my classes, and my least favorite. I would prefer to retain more of the archaic phrases, even if a bit obtuse, than to resort to modern slangy phrases such as “get a gripâ€, or the like. One of my students has even chosen to follow along our reading of the Iliad using a different version. I can’t blame him.
As they say, a book cannot be judged by its cover. Similarly, a book set cannot always be judged by its Amazon image. This box set is of a super high quality with its hardcover volumes and superior storage box. Definitely worth displaying in the front of the bookcase!
Classic literature wonderfully translated. I bought this collection after having read Dante's Divine Comedy and wanting to read some more epic stories. Truly a wonderful work of powerful imagination. But what can I say that hasn't already been said? Do yourself a kindness and invest in the time to read this. Also, that the Aeneid is included is such a sweet bonus.
The Iliad, Odyssey and Aeneid are some of the greatest tales of all time, and if you're going to pick one set to own and cherish, it's this copy. Robert Fagles does a tremendous job of maintaining the epic feel of the words and weaving the intricacies of epic storytelling into his translation. I had a tough time with some other translations because it failed to maintain somewhat of a narrative feel, or a Novel feel if that makes sense. Fagles finds the happy medium between the epic and a clear tale.On top of that, the set is absolutely beautiful. I've recently begun collecting books and this box set looks amazing on the shelf, and in your hands. I prefer paperbacks, which these are, but they have the ornate look and design of a hardcover. This is about as good as a paperback gets. I definitely recommend reading each of these poems at least once, and this is a great edition to read and to own.
