This is probably the BEST book I've read about conceptualizing art in general, and abstract art in particular. The author gets down to business right away, and tackles the core problem of what visual art really is and how it differs from other art forms. With a little help from Heidegger and Gadamer, and lots of it from Klee, we are given a precise and clear account of why art is essential for living and why it has bee so difficult to pin dow. I feel this is a must for everyone interested in art, philosophy or contemporary culture; or for just anyone in need of some enlightnment in one of the most difficult and pressing issues of our time.
The essay itself reads like the "genesis" and "movement through life" that Dennis J Schmidt so superbly offers as a consideration for an ethics that has its place in Being and art! The thrust of Dennis Schmidt's essay is an inquiry for the need to reexamine the language that philosophy has traditionally used to interpret modern painting. As I see it, Dennis J Schmidt has also taken on a challenge to perception and an experience of the art object ( in this case painting) as the "thing-in-itself," an approach to painting that originated in the writings of Emanual Kant, and culminated in the writing of Clement Greenberg and eventually found its validity under the guise of Minimalism. Whereas minimalism in the area of painting ( its primary focus being sculpture) negated the traditional role of illusion as the primary source of expression and communication, it ultimately relegated painting to what it considered it's "real" function; expressing the objectness of the very support system on which one painted: a philosophical position rendering metaphor to the trash can and in its wake left painting threadbare as a means of expression beyond anything other than the literalness of a painted object.I found buried deep within this essay an interesting alternative to the philosophy wrought by Greenberg's writing on modern art. The essay probes by way of an entirely different and unique sense of one of the major tenets from Kant's Third Critique, the"aesthetic idea." It weaves a very pursauasive argument integrating some very interesting insights into similar concerns with interpretation (hermeneutics) through examining the writings of Heiddeger, Gadamer, Merleau-Ponty and John Sallis, and the painting and writings of Paul Klee.As an artist and emeritus Professor of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I have taught seminars on many of the issues related to Minimalism. This essay is without question a major breakthrough in the thinking of not only Minimalism's position via Greenbergian thought but a must read for any artist(I include myself) who cares about the ethics of art-making and phenomenology and painting.Sent from my iPad
